  • Veiled Vestal Virgin In Marble.

My Wife and I enjoyed a wonderful visit to Chatsworth House in Derbyshire today. We both stood transfixed at the marble statue of the veiled Vestal Virgin by Raffaelle Monti. How he managed to achieve the transparency effect of the veil over the statues face is quite simply amazing. I just hope this hand held shot taken without flash using my EM-1 with 12-40mm manages to capture the beauty of the subject.

My wife and I visited Chatsworth a couple of years ago... I, too, was amazed by this statue... incredible work. Thanks for reminding me of it.

Quite an amazing piece of sculpture and your piccie really shows it off to a T. The close up is quite ghostly/spooky and I could feel the hairs rise on my scalp... all three of them when I first looked at it.

Book your tickets online and gift aid it. It adds 10% to the price but gets you free parking (otherwise it's £3.00) and you will be given a voucher worth 15% of the entry price, to spend in the shops or restaurant on the day of your visit. Then get there early. The house is absolutely magnificent but the grounds definitely need a couple of hours to be explored. Don't get lost in the maze as my beloved did though.
We are members of the National Trust and English Heritage but Chatsworth is privately run. However I don't begrudge a single penny of the entrance fee as it's definitely one of the best if not the best property we've visited. I can't believe we've left it so long to go.

Yes Chatsworth is a great day out, both house and Garden. That's a very special sculpture and you captured it well.
