"Our" Kittiwakes spend the winter at sea in the Atlantic and only come to our region to breed in the spring.
According to my BTO ( British Trust for Ornithology) book on bird migration ringing records show that many fly towards Greenland and eastern Canada. It is thought that many of our immature birds stay in the rich feeding grounds of the Newfoundland Banks and return east one or two years later as breeding birds. Apparently they are very adept at moving around in flocks at sea to avoid the worst weather.
