  • More south coast moments

We found our way to Pagham near Selsey (you can call me Bill).

So, here is a detail of Pagham church.

What is going on here? All the mortar has shards of flint stuck in it.

In Bognor, at ankle level, I saw this.

    Oh dear...
Laying down in the street again. A photographer's life, eh?

And finally (inland) here is Midhurst Museum.

    Well, no.

The museum is actually a single room about 8 feet square, full of railway memorabilia and much too small to photograph.

I think they roll the suitcases out on the pavement each morning so folks can get in the museum.

Did you mean to get down so low for No 2 or did you go for a Burton?

      Great details as uaual, Pete.

Many thanks folks. I say if you see it, snap it. Even if it does involve a certain amount of grovelling.

Two more moments. More conventional, taken from a rather more vertical position....

Particularly like the deck chairs. Did you rearrange them for this composition or is it "as found?"

                Actually there's a tale there.

I stop and look at them for a moment. I spin the composition in my mind, and decide to walk round and photograph from the other side, for a non distracting background.

I wait for a family to clear the frame.

At this point my wife asks me if I am going to re-arrange them so they are all in a straight line.

"Erm, no - that would be all wrong"

                :-)

Your Pagham church shot shows "galleting" which the insertion of small stones (often flint, as in this case, but depends on what is available locally) into the mortar. It's usually used when the local building stone is not freestone (which is relatively easy to work into even blocks) so that you have uneven blocks with large irregular areas of mortar (which is vulnerable to water). The galleting gives extra strength to the mortar.

                    Aha.

I overheard someone say it was to prevent birds pecking away at the mortar.

                    That sounded a bit unlikely
