Butterflies - dinner a deux!

The Tour de France is obviously having an effect!

We were seeking out butterflies and once again the heat of the day was causing them to shelter low and not hang about on the flower heads but I managed to get a few shots -

1. A small skipper and (I think) a meadow brown sharing without either of them becoming annoyed with the other -



2. A ringlet -



3. A small skipper -



4. A small tortoiseshell -



and, finally,

5. A ruddy darter -



All taken with the OM-D E-M1, 60mm lens. It is a difficult choice, when photographing butterflies, etc., whether to use the 60mm or the 75-300mm. With the former the definition is superb but it is frustratingly easy to frighten the subject by getting too close and, of course, you lose out on the excellent dof you can achieve with the latter.

some envy creating images there Anne, the Skipper in particular is a favourite of mine and I'm still waiting to see one this year

Lovely detail and colour in all of them but the Skipper wins, by a hair

If not the Tour de France this macro set is certainly a tour de force, Annie - I concur with Brian - your camera angle on the skipper is masterful ... (mistressful? )

Have you tried using the x2 dtc for macro. Ok I know it's a crop out of the centre and an upsize but it doubles you work focal length while maintaining you DOF so you don't have to get as close.
I use it a lot for macro making my ZD50mm and Ec14 combination effectively 140mm.

Worth a try.

Oh and by the way well done with the pictures, very nice.

Andy - many thanks for your tip - I will certainly give this a try. I returned to the meadow before reading your post with the 75-300mm lens and managed to bag many more shots being further away from my subjects, getting good dof but losing out on clarity, so will definitely have to experiment.
