  • Two "flutterby" visitors

Very brief visits to my garden of two spring favourites, first photos this year of these species.

Green-veined White, often overlooked as a "cabbage white" but in reality a creature of some beauty, and it doesn't feed on your Brassicas but the common hedge side wild flower Garlic Mustard:

    Detail:

And my Spring favourite the Orange Tip, this one is a male which has bright orange tips to the upper sides of it's forewings but I think the underside of the hind wing is more interesting:

nice work David, I see you were using f10, do you see any significant changes in detail / DOF compared to using f5.6 or f8?

I particularly like the under wing detail on the Orange Tip

Thanks Brian, I was using f10 as I like to see as much of the insect in focus as I can and sometime go to f16. These shots were only lightly cropped so the effects of diffraction with a small aperture would not be evident.

I love to see Butterfly's in full display, but, like you, I find the underwing detail even more interesting from a detail point of view.
The picture tells the story, great when you have a bad memory.DW.

Not seen any green veined yet...but its too cold and windy as yet.

Are the close ups close ups or crops......?? Either way they are great.

Underside of Orange Tip for me everytime as the white on the topside id so bright.

            Superb captures!

I was hoping my interest would be distracted from the red kites, which have proved to be so elusive this year, to the season of butterflies but, apart from being quite windy locally, many of our favourite haunts (and theirs) have been cut right down so it may be a few weeks before there is sufficient vegetation to attract a variety of species.

            Regards,
