    Stephen,

You can virtually smell the oil & coaltar.

I like the B&W approach, the subject is, I expect, Black and I don't think there is much more colour in the image anyway?

I wonder if an HDR approach would have worked to balance the huge range of lighting across this shot?

Thanks Graham - yes, I could try a bit of HDR from the single image. There was a bit of colour - the fitters overalls are bright orange, which is why I mono'ed it!

Just for interest, I attach two more images of the same photo. The first is the original file. The second is a pseudo-HDR rendition made simply by processing the raw file 3 times with different exposure compensation settings then putting them through Photomatix. As you can see, it reveals quite a bit of lens flare despite a hood being used, due to the lighting conditions in the shed. I've not attempted any sort of noise reduction.

As an 'honorary bloke', I just thought I'd stick my oar in and say that I think the mono version does it for me

The 'pseudo' hdr version is good, and it makes the detail stand out really well, but that has meant that the engineer's overalls stand out a bit too well for my liking, as I think that draws your eye away from the loco.

          Definitely the mono one

I like the mono version more but wonder how the mono version would look with HDR applied - I like that effect of this sort of image. Its a shame about the fitter though.

Thanks for posting all the images. They are really well worth viewing.

It's the mono one for me as well, much more my cup of tea, just love it.

Thanks folks. I saw the fitter coming and decided he would add a bit of life to what would otherwise just be a record shot. I knew he would be blurred if I kept the exposure longish. If he'd been wearing dark overalls it wouldn't have looked at good in mono, in my opinion!

                    Thanks Stephen,

                    I really enjoyed these, especially the B & W!

                    Nice one, too, Rod.
