  • Bohemian Waxwings

It was supposed to be heavily overcast with risk of rain today but the forecast had changed to moderate overcast as I woke up this morning. Eager to test how my E-M5 (just back from repair) performs on my new scope I took off for a hike through a wooded area and was rewarded by by a flock of Bohemian Waxwings. Some careful approach allowed me to come into shooting range. The results are not too bad considering the poor background. I also had had wished for some sun, but you can't always get everything.

Shortly after these shots they vanished, not to be seen again.

    Thanks for looking,

PS The EM-5 IBIS behaved as it is supposed to. Good news indeed.

I noticed there is plenty of Rowan berry supply left in spite of the storm we had two weeks ago, so I guess they will stay around

Very nice Todd, they are interesting looking birds. I do hope we see them over here, there was a rumour of a small flock in Inverness, but I haven't spotted any.

Great shots Tord. You're an expert at these. It's a lovely bird, thanks for sharing.

Did you check for a Cedar Waxwing mixed in with them?

                  Re: Bohemian Waxwings

Cedar Waxwings are found in Americas only as far as I know. I looked up on the Swedish ornothology Society and there is only one (1) observation recorded, in Sweden, dated 2013-12-23. Not confirmed.

                    Re: Bohemian Waxwings

I seem to remember a record of one in a flock of Bohemian Waxwing in the UK in the mid 90's. Cedar Waxwing are a summer species and Bohemian a winter species around here.

                      Re: Bohemian Waxwings

                      From Wikipedia:

Rare vagrants have reached western Europe, and there are two recorded occurrences of Cedar Waxwing sightings in Great Britain.

Slight confusion guys, as David M is in Canada.

Amazing shots again Tord, that last one is something extra . Now if only we could remove that twig .

Still a bird I yet to see in the flesh, so very pleased to see these images.

Lovely shots Tord, you are the lucky one. Looks like we are unlikely to get the thousands we had visit last winter, but I suppose it's early days yet!
