  • Reed Warbler

I'm still experimenting with the DTC on the E-M5 and finding it is very useful for locating and auto-focusing on small birds in large bushes. Although the smallest AF target area does not change with the DTC, but due to the x2 magnification of the image within the viewfinder it helps in accurately positioning the centre of the AF target area over the subject. Reed Warblers are rather secretive, wary and fast moving little birds and are always a challenge, but I think are made easier to capture with the DTC. The image has been further cropped by about 50% and a tad sharpening, clarity and saturation applied in LR5.2. I am still not sure about the reduction in post processing available with jpeg as apposed to RAW but this is appearing to be a more useful tool than I originally thought.

What a fine shot. I hardly see one let alone get a photograph! Please tell me your secret

      Great job.

Does the DTC affect RAW? What I was wondering was if you set the camera to use DTC in the JPEG in order to achieve better focus, would you still capture the unconverted image in RAW, preserving all the information otherwise lost in the converted JPEG?

(Setting the recording mode to RAW+JPEG of course...)

Well there is no secret. I visit the area often and have got to know what features various species tend to favour, it's then just a matter of waiting patiently in the shadows until they show themselves.

It only affects RAW in that the cropped area is indicated in the camera but not in LR. I have the RAW of this file but am merely showing the DTC version here to illustrate what it is capable of and that the AF advantages I've perceived may be a useful tool.

Nice image capture. Well worth the patient waiting time, thanks for sharing your technique I'm sure it will be of benefit to many forum members including myself.

Thanks - that was my point. That using DTC perhaps aids better focussing while maintaining full RAW data.

David I will try this technique out as it looks interesting. Do you have a simple way of selecting a small AF target area please? It will perhaps reduce the camera's choice of focus on the background rather than the subject. I did see some suggestions at one stage but could never seem to make them work.

                thank you
