  • Suprising Whats on your doorstep (well about 8 mile away)

    Hello all,

As the title states it is sometimes surprizing what is local if you know where to look.

While trolling the tinternet for waterfalls in Derbyshire I came across Lumsdale Valley nr Matlock. Wooded valley fed by Bentley Brook and this brook powered something like 7 watermills many many years ago. From grounding bones for fertilizer, corn and even grinding barytes for paint (whatever it is).

So a couple of weekends ago went for a look in between dodging the showers managed to take a few photos showing part of the walk and some of the buildings.

    Any comments much appreciated

    Old mill building

    Old waterwheel pit

    Same pit

Another old pit hard to gauge this scale of this pit

Different view of the same pit

I will be visiting this valley again during the coming seasons I think it may be very interesting.

    Thanks

    Ian

A very interesting series of shots Ian. I find it fascinating when you come across evidence of previously important industries which have passed into history. Those buildings look as if they could do with a good coat of barytes though.

The mill remains are interesting but the waterfalls are sublime, what a great discovery - I wish that was only 8 miles from my home!

I really like the waterfall shots, super job. The first image would in my very humble opinion benefit from either a crop or being exposed a little closer to the subject. There is there is a lot of wood either side of the building and I think the ruin for me is the point of interest. Some of the building shots look like the highlights are slightly toward being blown I suspect because of the wide contrast between the shaded building interiors and a bright sky. I am no expert but I would have maybe used a neutral grad filter in post processing to tone down the sky.

        Kind regards

Looks a fascinating place to spend time. You could do a series of shots through the seasons.

Great and fascinating set. I love photos of the ruins of (relatively) recent history.

Waterfalls are a favourite of mine and these are lovely; I also like the buildings so well done on an excellent set.

                  Thanks for all the comments.

I was taking the waterfalls with my E5 obviously on tripod with filters . The shots of all the building I was taking with my EPL1 with the 4/3 rds 9-18 attached really just to show my family the surroundings so its no excuse not to do it properly.

Looking forward to visiting again as I believe there could be a lot more to view.

Anyone localish to Matlock in Derbyshire wanting any directions please get in touch.

Like this set and the ruins. I wonder why they have fallen though. They look built to last for centuries.

BTW: Baryte is Barium-Sulfate (BaSO4) or 'Schwerspat' as we say in German. It is a heavy (German 'schwer' = heavy) mineral normally found in hydrothermal vains. Ground it makes a white pigment; much used in indoor paints (ever wondered why they are so darn heavy?) and the paper industry. Wow! Long ago that I had to do with it and last visited a Baryte mine ...

There are plenty of old baryte mines and ruins in swaledale and particularly Teesdale

                        Cont.

I suspect the commercial demise of baryte mining was linked to the development of titanium oxide, even whiter for paint etc. they do make very evocative pictures
