  • Update on Seafire from post AIRCAFT

I have checked with the organisers from Saturdays airshow in Newcastle Co. Down and have been given the following information regarding the aircraft some thought was a Seafury when shown in post AIRCRAFT(image heavy).

Seafire XVII SX336 was built in April 1946 in Yeovil, missed WW2. It was put into storage in June 1953, scapped in 1955. The derelict fuselage was found in a scrap yard in Warrington in 1973.
It changed hands many times and was aquirred by a Tim J Manna in 2001 who finished the project, it made its first post resoration flight in 2006 in North Weald and is now used for air displays.

I am not convinced they are right or we got a different aircraft at the show I expected single coxpit, a sharper nose and exhausts showing if a Seafire? The letters they gave me SX336 do not match the aircraft below which shows VX281..

Sorry this shot is a bit? blurred. Comments welcome on which it is.

Thought so even on Saturday I had my suspicions the engine did not seem right even the wing tips looked wrong Thanks for the photograph never even considered that the wings folded. Case settled I will ask further of organisers!

Yes, the aircraft shown has a big radial engine - a Bristol Centaurus.

Seafire SX336 made a wheels up landing at an airshow in France on 9th July 2011 and was severely damaged. It has been restored and was due to be flying at airshows again this year. It appears that it was not available for some reason for your event and the Sea Fury was substituted.

SX336 is one of only two Seafires still flying. It is a carrier based version of the Spitfire and therefore also has folding wings as ahown in this picture
