Must be a regional thing, I've never heard them called that in Cheshire.
Around this part of Ontario wasps are called hornets.Comment

I have occasionally, but not very often, heard them called Jaspers. I knew what to expect before I opened the thread. Of course, I didn't know how good it would be and it really is a treat!

Fantastic shot....but I have to ask why? as well As much as I love macro there is no way I would have got that close to a wasp! Seriously, great image, it looks very alien.

If you don't aggravate things they tend to leave you alone. I've never been stung by one personally so that may change if I were to be a victim.Comment

I don't like wasps at all....and I'm scared of being stung again I certainly don't aggravate them!
Bees on the other hand are fine by me and I have lots of plants in the garden to encourage them
