  • Hazy Parton sunset

The sunset was hazy last night but the sea was clear calm and blue (this is unusual to have all three) the sky was not inspiring (to me) but was warm so I set up and decided on an ND filter for a change. The camera rendered it better than I remember it I know that.

Here is the best shot I got which crop is best?

Nice. I prefer the 1st crop, there's a line from bottom R to top L. Sort of, anyway.

No.1 looks better - I'm not keen on the horizon being on the 1/2 way line except for reflections.

Thanks Ed I rather like the rocks in the foreground on that one

My vote goes with the others. Top one. It's a great photo either way.

I prefer the first crop. The row of rocks angled inwards from bottom right act as more of a leading line for the eye. In the second crop they seem more detached from the viewer and consequently less effective for drawing the eye, due to the greater distance into the scene.

Gorgeous colours captured with very effective use of an ND grad and long exposure gives a calming and attractive smoothing of the sea. I'd say it's one for the wall.

                      Re: Hazy Parton sunset

Lovely colours in this shot - I definitely go for the first crop.

I have to admit I am not a great one for 'photographic rules', relying almost solely on the outcome of a crop being pleasing to me and hoping it is to others! I think I have chosen the first in this instance as the eyes can take in the whole scene in a single glance whereas with the second, I find my eyes moving around the image. I suspect I am agreeing with what John (Zuiko) has already said!

                      Regards,
                      Ann1e

I can live outside the rules happily but sometimes they help especially when you are trying to work out what not quite right with a shot.
