      3rd version best for me, too. Not quite sure why - maybe the colours work together slightly better or something.

        I use Photoshop CS6 starting from Camera Raw editor, then using various blend modes and masks on separate layers to get the look I want by selectively painting through the layer masks.

        Some plugins used along the way within Photoshop were Topazlabs Simplify and Nik Colour Efex Pro, again applied on separate layers and brushed in to taste. I also play around with various layer blending modes to get the look I'm after.

        I'd like to add that from the start of the process I like to work in 16bit Tiff mode and open the image as a Smart Object in Photoshop. This then allows me to reopen the image in Camera Raw should I choose to do so.

        In the last variation I separated the tulip from the background so I could change the colour of the tulip and also apply a different brush technique to the background independently.

        At some point I'll record the process as a video file so you can see the steps as the image develops.
