    All in the eye of the beholder...

    Walking down the street on my way to work the other day, I spotted this poster for an upcoming local event...I did a double take when I saw my photo on a billboard!!



    Not the best quality, as I've just downloaded a small file from the dreaded FB, but I'm so pleased that my pet brass band are using my photo! (they have my full permission to use any of my photos for anything they like!)

    ...and I'm also pleased that I didn't follow my first inclination to simply delete this one as a bad job due to the low light and the motion blur!

    I'm not for one minute claiming that it's anything special...I was SO close to deleting this one as a bad job...just goes to show that perhaps sometimes we can all be far too critical of our own work...

    Hello Janet,
    I think your photo is great and the blur has helped to convey the mood of the evening. Whoever designed the poster has done a good job too by using colours which are in your photo for the text and background. You should take credit that your photo has inspired them as well.

      Show us the pic on it own too please. For the motion blur on conductor makes the shot.

          Indeed it is the solitary motion blur that makes it special.

            Delete it? Are you mad? From what I can see at this size it's a top shot - the blur of the conductor makes it all the more dynamic. Who says brass bands can't be exciting? No wonder they picked it.

                    I think I deleted most of them from that day after I uploaded them to FB...I wasn't really happy with any of them and I didn't for one minute think the band would want to use any of them...I'll have to check on my PC when I get home!

                      Great photo, the band must have been really pleased with it, don't be so quick with the delete button especially as hard drives are so cheap these days.

                        I think this is interesting. In the context of the poster the motion blur is fantastic and adds some excitement to the shot encouraging you be be there and participate. As a standalone picture it is not clear if it adds anything or not. The heads in the standalone shot are also a lot more prominent and distracting than in the poster and it makes you look as though you are closer.

                          Yes, that's what I thought...to me it simply doesn't work as a standalone shot, but the editing they've done for the poster has really brought something out of it.

                            Janet, I really must have a word with you.

                            You worry too much about technical perfection when in reality you have that rare gift of visual creativity. Or, to put it another way, you have an eye for a picture. I've seen many technically perfect shots that bore me to tears, give me creativity any day. Oh, and to put you out of your misery your tecnical ability is fine - stop being so hard on yourself.

                              Nice words John, and thank you for that, but I'm still not at all happy with that image, although I love what they've managed to do with it.

                              Whilst I'm delighted that they've managed to make something of it, the fact remains that the original image really isn't very good and the grain is horrendous...my Oly's simply cannot be used successfully in low light conditions and it shows...I couldn't use a tripod on the day, but I did use a monopod and even that wasn't enough to get sharp shots...anything above ISO400 is just not pleasant due to the noise...

                              I can't seem to get anything usable in low light with my e510 and e520 unless I get very lucky...unfortunately I simply don't have the funds to upgrade so I'm stuck with them and getting increasingly frustrated...

                              I can't begin to tell you how many simply fabulous shots I missed over this last weekend and my grandson's first birthday...my Oly's simply couldn't cope with it...however, my little Samsung compact camera saved the day...

                              Pah! My son's mobile phone was able to take better photos than I could!
