  • Wild or escapee?

This mass of flowers are on a field bank near us. they spread further each year. I can't identify them and am not sure whether they are wild flowers or a garden escapee.

Looks like what i know as Garden Honesty. Not a native but has colonised most of the world afaik. It's from the Caucasus iirc. Makes those odd shiny disc-like seed cases that goes into dried flower arrangements.

I thought Honesty too but I'm not sure as there are no Honesty-like leaves in the shots.

It's honesty (Lunaria annua) David, the silvery disc like " leaves" in winter are actually seed pods.

They grow wild along the local canal by me.

        Regards Paul.

Yes, I have a garden full of them and my wife uses the seed pods for flower arranging, but the leaves visible in your first shot a nowhere evident in Mike's image where the only leaves are lanceolate - not Honesty leaves, the stamens are yellow in Mike's and not in Honesty.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have tracked it down. It is Dames Violet, Hesperis matronalis.

May be an escapee or naturalised wild flower.

Stamens on Honesty do turn yellow i think. But no, the leaves are not right here.

After looking closely I think you are correct David, it is probably Dame's Violet
(Hesperis matronalis) a member of the mustard plant family.

                        Re: Wild or escapee?

Thanks all - I did identify them several posts back, Dame's Violet. This is a fairly positive identification by someone far more knowledgeable than I.

The scent of them is wonderful and there are masses of butterflies. Orange tip and brimstone (plus, regrettably, cabbage white) I know. I may be seeking ID on some of the others if only the wretched things will stay still long enough to be photographed.

As a matter of interest are there any M.Zuiko 60mm macro owners reading this? If so, how rapid is the autofocus?
