  • Not Exactly Symmetry

as it is a repeated shape that is mirrored in age.

It's getting towards midweek and I like the idea.

Nick I just rated this at 10 on the gallery. I like the picture and the title as well.

      Thanks Peter

Especially as I was not sure that I had made this idea work (it was the best of several I shot with the idea of the old head/young head) so it has been 'sitting on the bench' for a week being muttered at.

You have managed the whites and the blacks very well.

Original thought too, pace yourself it's only Tuesday

          Thank you Graham

I originally did the Raw conversion in Master but was unhappy with the results (unusual as Master normally does a good job), so this copy was done in RawTherapee which enabled me to keep the whites better (after a bit of a play), and then 'tuned' in The GIMP.

Amongst the things I do I run a small art group and teach drawing and painting. The thing that instantly struck me was the composition. The way that the curves work together allowing your eye to work around the two birds as one. Also the negative spaces counterbalance the positives. You have an artistic head on a physicists body!

To me there is a very good intuitive sense of the balance in the frame. If you look at the detail then you may find things to change. Getting the composition so well balanced is why I say it is intuitive.

Of course it may just be luck!

I suppose the fact I was not a very good (or even typical) physics student may help. But there is a sense of rightness, shape, balance and beauty in a lot of physics and it can also be seen (for those that can read them) in a good mathematical proof.

I find nature shots difficult, one of the reasons I'm taking so many, because of the difficulty of balancing the need to capture the 'action' and the wish to create the shape/pattern/form (or even keep the d*** things in shot). In part that's why I enjoy playing with flowers/grasses etc, they are closer to attempts to create pure images/shapes/patterns.

Part of why this shot was 'benched' for a week was the need to get the shape right, intrinsically (or indeed in terms of the technicalities of photography) it is not a very interesting image. To work at all it needed the shape to represent the idea.

Ahh, I have fallen into my old trap, pontificating on precepts, when all I intended was to say

              Thank You

and luck probably played a big part

                Re: Not Exactly Symmetry

On the mind trick side of things, I have played a bit with fake symmetry.. Like this:

You take a scenic image, duplicate the layer, flip it and stitch it together. Big deal, now you have an image that is clearly a fake.

However, now you start tampering slightly with the symmetry using Photoshop - Quite soon you can create a new image which will convince the viewer it is genuine. Its surprising how little you need to change to remove the perceived "mirror effect"

Give it a try some time

                (Here's one I mangled earlier)

Look, I'm an old man. I shouldn't be expected to put up with this.
