  • Liken my Lichen ?

This is rare, ONE SHOT for the whole day out ... well a few hours, maybe 3 but it was grossly dull/overcast and raining much of the time

BUT I had to grab a shot of this Lichen at Sir Harold Hilliers Arboretum, between Winchester & Romsey in Hampshire.

I have never seen an "almost" Lichen bush growing on a tree !

    Good very clean air

    That's a fantastic specimen!

Give it a few weeks and the Rhodi's; Azaelas and Magnolias will be out too well worth a visit then

                Norma had her priorities right!
Oh what I would give for a good soaking rain! We haven't had much for 4 months now - BUT the temp is dropping, nights have an autumnal feel about them, so I think at last summer has gone!

Nice shot Chevvy the dull weather helped maintain the detail I think.

Alf, I think your quite right bright sunlight or any sunlight would have ruined the very pale green colours

                          Re: Liken my Lichen ?

One shot eh? I have days when that's more than me

Nice shot of what looks like a clump of Evernia, but you'd need it in front of you to be certain. It's very common on deciduous trees and is relatively tolerant of pollution for a lichen. Interesting stuff, it's been used by man for centuries - a perfume fixative and dying agent (oak moss), it was ground up with rose petals to make a power for whitening wigs (without an h) and with the bonus of covering up the stench of unwashed human and killing off headlice. Also, flavouring Middle Eastern bread, wadding in shotguns, an antibiotic (usnic acid) and building Long-tailed tit nests. Or so my lichen book says.

And, of course, for relieving the photographic monotony of a long dull day

John, I have lots of no shots days - or days when I just take snapshots of the children doing or making something ...

                            I think I am a weekly Tog

Thanks for the info the Lichen ... there is tonnes of it hanging about in the thousands of threes there !
