  • Chicks in nest 1st attempt

These little friends are the offspring of what i believe are Swallows who arrive at the house in spring to the same nests and then leave toward autumn with thier new families. This is the first chance ive had to catch them with thier heads out of nest waiting to be fed. They are right up in the eves of the house so not easy to shoot but I will keep trying and hopefully get a better shot.Iain

    Iain,

I believe they are Barn Swallow chicks. Look forward to some more shots.

      Hi guys

How do you tell them apart from housemartins. Which I was happily photographing in France. This from my gallery here looks very similar.

These were ID'd for me by a good naturalist with me at the time.

Do you have pictures of the parents?

Not doubting the word of experts just interested... I am moving on from calling them all just birds, then little brown jobs, I can now ID quite a few birds but only those I have been shown by my mentor.

        Hi Peter,

In truth, with the amount visible, you can't tell them apart. Thats why more photos, particlarly of the adults, would clinch it. the adults should be visiting the nest frequently to feed the chicks.

I have included a photo of a juvenile barn swallow. You can see from this image that the characteristic red face is just appearing, particlarly on the forehead.

As you know, I too am learning to ID but, not having come across a House Martin before, I never thought of making this as a suggestion. Seeing your photo makes me stand to one side until further images are produced. I am however inclined to agree with you.
