  • From today's walk.

A dull murky day but I still managed to find some interesting things on the reserve.

The stag Beetle Habitat looked possible.

Ah yes, some colour and texture when you get close. Fascinating Fungi and rotting wood.

This one looks as if it's slithering away.

The Gorse is bursting into bloom.

And finally the mowing patterns on the Wildflower Meadow make a nice abstract. Must have been done after a pub lunch.

All taken with the E-M5 and 60mm macro.

    Thanks for looking.

Glad you got some decent shots, Peter. That fungi looks very interesting.

              Many thanks Chevvy,John,Mart,Iain and Brian.

              Chevvy.
That was no farmer, that was Charlie (Charlotte) one of our reserve Wardens who is a whiz on a tractor. I think she was following the contours of the meadow which are not obvious in this view as it was taken from the top of viewing mound which is about 10ft high.

The Fungi in Nos 2 &3 are Bracket fungi, I believe Many-zoned Polypore.

              Iain.
No 4 is also a type of fungus although I agree it looks more like something the birds have deposited.

              Regards.

I love the last of these in particular Peter but also enjoyed the fungi shots

Looking forward to seeing some stag beetle shots later in the year

Great shots Peter with lovely detail from the 60mm. It's amazing how a seemingly innocuous pile of wood has such a variety of fungi and lichens. As for the wavy lines in the meadow when I worked on the farm using machinery the thing was to keep everything as straight as possible, now they want everything curved or contoured so that it looks natural!
                  Cheers Jim.

                    Thanks Greg.

I haven't seen a Stag Beetle yet but this "created habitat" and another similar one were only put in last year. These Beetles are only found in South and Central England and are becoming scarce so this is part of an attempt to increase the population. The wood is rotting nicely now so hopefully we will be lucky this year.

                    Regards.

I'm really enjoying the 60mm, it's opening up all sorts of new interests.

You're right about changing farming methods. Of course this is on a nature reserve so we certainly don't want straight lines. As well as being a wildflower meadow this area is nesting habitat for a number of birds, especially Skylarks of which we have lots. While I was taking these shots I could here them all the time but they are so well camouflaged in the grass that you only see them when they fly up a few feet in front of you.

                      Regards.

Nice No. 4 looks good. Melted cheese comes to mind with a nice growth on it.
Do you know what type of fungus it is?

Peter you always impress. Your images contain good tone & texture and the last shot is,
                          IMHO a true photographers image.

The nearest I can find is a Blushing Bracket Daedaleopsis confragosa but it looks as though yours has collapsed

                              Thanks Ed. good description.
I've looked at so many fungi in books today that my brain hurts and I still haven't positively identified it.
I think it could be a resupiate fungus, Peniophora cinerea but Imageryone (next post) could equally be right with Blushing Bracket.
