  • Holiday snaps - by the water's edge

Summer in SA is the rainy season so there was plenty of water about.

Hippopotami need to spend the day in the water to avoid overheating. They come out to feed at night so are difficult to photograph on land. That's possibly not a bad thing as, apparently, more folk are killed by hippos than any other mammal. They are nevous and if you get between a hippo and the water you are likely to be trampled or bitten.

They do seem to enjoy a good wrangle. These two were just on the edge of the flood current in the Sabie river.

We encountered this pair on the St Lucia estuary.

It's hard not to enjoy the way they seem to grin at you.

Equally dangerous if you get on the wrong side of it is the crocodile - few humans survive an encounter with one. They love floating in the water with just their eyes and nostrils showing.

    Ashore they look rather sinister

This female was incubating eggs in the St Lucia estuary.

Finally we were greatly amused by the terrapins we saw at a watering hole in mKhuse. Goodness knows why they like to stack themselves up like this.

A nice series. Were you in a boat, to 'encounter' these? I like the croc in water, it's just as sinister as the on-land one . The terrapins are hilarious - it would be interesting to see them scrambling onto each others' shells .

Th last three hippos and the croc incubating her eggs were from a boat, the rest from the shore.

Another wonderful set, I love hippos but, as you say, wouldn't want to get too close! great to see a croc in the wild, too.
