  • Holiday snaps - twitcher's delight

Oh dear, this is going to make me look like a twitcher but I promise you I'm not. I keep no lists of birds seen and I don't go out searching for any particular species. It's a challenge getting decent bird pix and it's satisfying when you do. I hope I've identified them correctly - if not please let me know.

You could hardly go to Africa without snapping a vulture or two.

    White-backed Vulture

    White-headed Vulture

At the other extreme comes this House Sparrow

    Bee-eaters include this Carmine Bee-eater

    and the European Bee-eater

    Rollers are also common

    Lilac-breasted

    and European

If you're looking for nice eyelashes try this Ground Hornbill

The Woodland Kingfisher is a bit of a misnomer. It eats insects, not fish

In the UK we're used to great flocks of water birds but in SA they're often seen in small numbers.

The Hamerkop is one of my favourites and it's easy to see how he gets his name.

This Three Banded Plover was on Sunset Beach

One thing to get used to is seeing birds that summer in Europe also summering in SA

    Black -winged Stilt

    Cattle Egret

Do the wattles on the next two serve some purpose in attracting a mate I wonder?

    Wattled Lapwing

    White-crowned Plover

Weavers make the most amazing nests. Apparently the male builds one and if his lady doesn't like it she tells him to make another! What's new then? Amongst the main predators are arboreal snakes which is why the nests are built in fairly inaccessible places.

    Masked Weaver

    Yellow Weaver

There's not much to beat this impressive African Fish Eagle who kindly posed in the top of a tree

Clearly he'd undergone media training and knew when to stage a stylish take off.

For the nocturnal here's a Scops Owl we found at a picnic site

Great shots, particularly the bee eaters and rollers.

Now which camera were these taken with?

The Exif data gives full details. The owl was taken with the E5 and for some reason none of the EM5 pix of it were much good - too close probably. All the others were with the EM5 and 100-300. Most of the pix are cropped althoughthe owl isn't which gives some idea of how close you could get. It was at a picnic spot so well accustomed to people on foot.

          Next up is arachnidae.

Oh fantastic set of shots. You make me very very envious.
Just one question I saw image no2 and just wondered what my mother-outlaw was doing up a tree in SA?
            Seriously really great images.
Off to throw teddy in the corner now.Might even kick my milk over!
