  • Another Grey Day

I was aiming to be at the Red Kite feeding station in time to see their 'lunch' being served and had some time to make a slight detour on the way. For a while it looked quite bright but the weather really closed in with light sleet and snow showers and it became quite dark; so time for looking closer again.

    Lichen

A nice waterfall on a small burn

I did make it to the the Kite feeding and there were 3 Kites, 2 Buzzards, at least 4 Ravens plus numerous crows and rooks, but by this time the light was way too dark and I have ditched all my shots (not there were many).

    Thanks for looking

Sorry to hear that the Kites were not playing the game Iain. But wow that burn and waterfall shot is just gorgeous. Beautiful exposure, sharp as a pin and totally superb.I am of course, very envious. Well done.

Iain, I like the focus spot in 2 along the middle bottom - a leaf and the waterfall to wee burn is stunning processed to purrrfection it would be so very nice to view the original large file ... for so much of the detail

        Great shots Iain.

The second lichen shot is very good. The burn is out of this world. Fantastic sharp detail and colour contrasting with the blurred water.

        Thanks for sharing.

Once again the weather has aided rather than hindered. Like these a lot.

The lichen shots are great, Iain, but I'm with Jon on this - the waterfall is just superb and really benefits from the flat, low contrast light. Look at the shadow detail and the range of greens is amazing. Top shot!

                    Re: Another Grey Day

I also like all of them, but the waterfall shot is great!

I hear people say they get 'tired' of them, but as someone who has dabbled and failed, I know it's not so easy to get the combination of speed/focus and composition to make these shots work. This one does!

It's on my list of shots I'd like to get right. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you David and thanks to everyone else who has commented on the waterfall shot. I initially spotted this from above and to the right of the image and also spotted a way down to water level; once there the lichen covered boulders stood out and I knew I could get a decent composition.
It wasn't a deliberate choice to go for the milky waterfall it was necessity. I started with a very low light level, used F11 to get the depth of field and added the polariser to remove as much reflection as possible from the water and the foliage; the result was a 2.5 second exposure.
I was very pleased with the sharpness of the image when I saw it on the PC, I was worried that having 2 of the tripod legs in the fast flowing burn would introduce some shake. However, I do think the processing to get it onto the website has slightly over sharpened it, the definition between the waterfall and the rock face on the left looks a little un-natural to me.
Overall a positive result and I think I will get a large print of this one.

Beautifully soft and subtle Iain, the close-ups are delightful. Although I am not a fan of silked water I daresay that low lighting dictated the exposure.
