I took my newly rediscovered 17mm (scratched) pancake lens out on the EP-1 this afternoon...the light was interesting!

this is the Italian gardens taken from the viewing platform...a little bit of flare on this one


this one and the next two are of the obviously un-renevated buildings -hopefully they will be developed at some point..




St Modwens have done a great job at Trentham Gardens since they took over a few years ago.




Perseus and Medusa....this has recently been reinstated having been lent out over the summer







this is a sculpture based on a crystal structure within the Italian gardens


this is the view of the lake from the opposite end to No 1...there is a tea room there....but it doesn't open until 28th March (limited opening in Winter...closed an hour before I arrived)

Interesting that the 17mm performs so well, considering the damage to the front element.
It certainly gives you great results under the right condition, great detail throughout.

Keep meaning to go to Trentham but never quite getting round to it even though it's on my doorstep. That building is very interesting even though it's seen better days. Very nice sharp set of images despite the lens damage.

A great example of the variety of compositions that can be made with just a single focal length. The lens damage only seems to affect image quality when shooting into the sun. Generally, we all know that the 17mm f2.8 is not the sharpest tool in the box but there is a certain something to the images it produces that I find very appealing. A very underated lens.

Hi Brian, this looks like the kind of place I would have a great time poking around in!
I like the sandstone (?) pillars shot. You would want deep pockets to restore this garden to its original glory.

Thanks everyone...I agree Zuiko ref the 17mm not being the sharpest....I have the 20mm f1.7 too but often prefer the 17mm...it has its own character.
Lyn, St Modwen seem to have deep pockets...the whole of Trentham gardens fell into a shameful state for years...but over the last five years St Modwens have created a new garden centre and a retail village too - there is also a Monkey forest surrounding the site. Its probably the most popular attraction in the area after Alton Towers theme park. We are lucky to be just 2 miles away from it.

Yes, sometimes a lens has a hard to define but pleasing quality that cannot be measured in technical tests.
