  • Reflecting on Natures Abstract.

I spotted this today on the frozen reservoir.

I thought it made a nice minimalist abstract.

Not sure I've got the crop right yet, will have to play with it some more.

    Thanks for looking.

Simple, graceful and beautiful, Peter. The crop looks about right to me.

Nice and simple maybe move the crop slightly to the right to take the reed away from the edge of the frame?

I like this type of image. I would probably increase the contrast, but that's just personal preference. Well spotted, a beautifully simple pic.

Again like John's Thaw image I like the simplicity of this one Peter.
An image that you will look back at again and again, nicely done

I love these minimalist reflections, I'd be tempted to ramp up the contrast as already suggested and then desaturate too to make a nice b/w

Peter it looks great. So simple but effective. For a bit of fun try rotating it 90 degrees clockwise it takes on a whole different abstract image

Strangely for once I disagree with John (Zuiko) in as much as I would crop the last four reeds on the right out.
Obviously it's a great minimalist image to start with but at the moment I think less is better.
                      Sorry Zuiko.

                          Re: Reflecting on Natures Abstract.

Here's the results of my attempts to implement the most helpful suggestions you've given for improving this image.
For information I use DxO Optics Pro 8 for processing which works a little differently from many other programmes (but I like it).

First I tried Shirley's suggestion of increasing the contrast. As I had already increased the contrast somewhat I didn't have much more to add but I found that by using the "highlight" slider I got a further worthwhile improvement.

For reference here's my original post.

Here's the result which I agree is a great improvement. Thanks Shirley.

                          Then I tried Brian's B&W idea.
Sorry Brian that doesn't work for my eyes. The very subtle colours in the stems in the original work better for me.

I tried Phil's 90 degree rotation idea. Interesting but I still prefer the original.

I liked Jon's " less is more" idea and agree that makes a further improvement.

However I prefered the proportions of the original so instead of cropping I cloned out the stems and adjusted the crop slightly to balance it up.

BINGO that's the one for me.

Many thanks for all the helpful suggestions.

Yep, that's the one. Just as I imagined it. Great stuff Peter. Hang it on the wall.
