A breezy day at Titchwell

Late last summer we spent a pleasant day at a Titchwell RSPB reserve, Norfolk. The weather was bright and breezy and there were plenty of birds to see.

The Little Grebe was challenging, as always, constantly diving down just as I was about to press the shutter and resurfacing about 10 metres away. I think the Godwit is a Black-tailed but if anyone reckons it is a Bar-tailed, I won't argue.

On one of our rare trips down south we must visit Norfolk again.
My wife keeps reminding me that I once suggested renting a holiday cottage to do some fairly serious birding in that area. Any recommendations? We would be coming down around early January.

Thank you. The best birding area in Norfolk is probably along the North coast, with places such as Titchwell, Cley, Holme and many more. Late last summer we spent a very enjoyable week in a cottage in Wells-next-the-Sea, which is ideally situated for accessing these places. In addition, it is an excellent base for a holiday with good local shops, pubs, restaurants and superb fish and chips. It is also an greatbirding place in its own right, with plenty of waders along the creek which leads to the sea and woodland at the end to attract smaller birds.

I am reluctant to recommend a cottage, as we all have different requirements and standards, but the one we stayed in was very nice, conveniently located and with a parking space right outside (parking is a problem in Wells). It is quite expensive, though, especially 'in season', although at its cheapest in January. The website is here.

We're at this moment staying in a friend's cottage in Thornham, and went briefly to the Titchwell reserve today! Grey and cold, and I was carrying the Swarovski binocs and I only had the 12-35 with me, so no Birdie shots - there's no way they'd have been a patch on yours anyway!

We've been coming to the area for years - it's gradually gone further and further up market, so if you can stay in a cottage and self cater for at least some meals it'll save a lot of cash. There are some excellent pubs listed in the Good Pub Guide up here.
