Five mile canal walk before we're snowbound!

It was very cold - frosty and the canal was frozen for the most part and the early part of our walk saw a little falling snow which lay on top of the already iced over water. One of the first sights to greet us reminded me of Chevvy's recent post. I guess someone had to hop home last night - this isn't one of yours, is it, Chevvy? -

We met few on our walk today - it really was rather bleak but we enjoyed the isolation and there was one plus point. In recent days we have returned home covered in mud but today the paths were rock hard - we did have to watch our step as the puddles were now mini ice rinks but it was generally easier going on the feet. In the pic below, the cormorant can be seen atop the distant tree, obviously a favourite perch! -

Towards the end of our outward trek we came upon a few narrowboat residents. It would seem they are keeping warm in the extreme conditions -

With you all the way, so nice to walk dry footed and not have to bathe dogs when you get back.
The waterbirds are suffering at the moment, so much frozen water about.

Love the last shot. Did you use the camera setting or tonemap it in the computor?

It does look cold Ann1e - but very beautiful.
I like No3 too, very much - (I am a bit Black and White happy at the moment)!
How lovely to be able to wrap up in scarves, coats and hats - we are stripping off down here! :
And now we have a bad bushfire burning out of control in our Mid North. It is in open grazing land so far, but has reached a quite large pine forest which is a worry. Luckily today is cooler, so the poor fire-fighters will find it better than yesterday's heat of 42 degrees.

Funny but I did get right boot "sucked orf" as I *walked over some frozen puddles* bu the glutonus mud underneath

ps * to * its the "child" in me that makes for fun for the children here

I lurve the last - like a postcard and I can honestly say that its "hot hot hot" in them Narrowboats - the small log burner more than adequately heats the space around HB's and dog on board and slow cooks the dinner as you potter through the locks all day

So we have snow to look foward to down south? Ro flew down on Wednesday to sign contracts, and back last night. Said they had a covering of the white stuff.

Ann1e No's 1&3 definitely do the business for me.
The pathos and the questions suggested in no1 are exquisitely intriguing.
No3 has so much fantastic atmosphere and I really like the crop. The dark edges concentrate the eye and the smoke is just the final touch to a superb image.

I too really like the atmosphere of the last image. The mono conversion has added to the atmosphere of the cold day.

I tend not to use the camera settings for effects and as I get most of my pleasure from my hobby of photography from being out and about and actually taking the pix, I spend as little time as possible on the computer! I use the very simple software - Picasa - it's quick and easy and with the last update quite a few features were added and in this instance I used the vignette and Holga-ish settings to create the effect.

We did enjoy our walk, although it was mighty cold but when you come across a few scenes worth recording it makes it all worthwhile. Too cold and damp today though - we did trudge into town and took a peek at the canal but only for a minute or two!

If it's atmospheric you want, Stephen, then how about this. It is not the best as it was taken this morning during a snow shower on our way back from town with the Leica D-Lux 4 which was in my pocket at the time. You are leaving a snow free zone to come to this? The scene is just a minute's walk from our front door!

It is weird until our friends sold up the 4 bed det house and bought a Narrowboat and took us out on the Kennet & Avon Canal - I did not like the idea of living in a boat - cold and damp all the time ... but it is not - it is cosy and warm even HOT ... although, I/WE have not been on the Narrowboat all day every day for 3 or 4 in these temps
