... I didn't take a walk along the canal towpath today. I met up with four girlfriends (we get together about every six weeks) at a hostelry in a small village about five miles from here. We were all neighbours about 25 years ago so it's good to catch up with all the family news.
Aldbury is well known in the area and is often used as a film location as it is typical of an English village built up around the pond and green. As I child I remember it being picturesque - chocolate box material - but, alas, we have the motor car - not that there weren't the odd few cars around when I was young, just not in such numbers! The woods that you see behind the village form part of Ashridge Forest -
1.

There are two very popular eating/drinking establishments in the village - this is the Greyhound where we meet. It is popular all year round but particularly so in the summer when many walkers congregate -
2.

To get away from the hustle and bustle of the village, I spent some peaceful time in the church grounds - This is St John the Baptist. The earliest parts date from the 13th century but the tower was added during the 14th century -
3.

It wasn't all peace! -
4.

and, finally, on the green in the centre of the village stand the old stocks and whipping post. The stocks were last used in 1835 to punish a drunken villager. Just as well I drove over or I might well have still been in Aldbury!
