  • and now for something completely different ...

... I didn't take a walk along the canal towpath today. I met up with four girlfriends (we get together about every six weeks) at a hostelry in a small village about five miles from here. We were all neighbours about 25 years ago so it's good to catch up with all the family news.

Aldbury is well known in the area and is often used as a film location as it is typical of an English village built up around the pond and green. As I child I remember it being picturesque - chocolate box material - but, alas, we have the motor car - not that there weren't the odd few cars around when I was young, just not in such numbers! The woods that you see behind the village form part of Ashridge Forest -

There are two very popular eating/drinking establishments in the village - this is the Greyhound where we meet. It is popular all year round but particularly so in the summer when many walkers congregate -

    2.

To get away from the hustle and bustle of the village, I spent some peaceful time in the church grounds - This is St John the Baptist. The earliest parts date from the 13th century but the tower was added during the 14th century -

    It wasn't all peace! -

    4.

and, finally, on the green in the centre of the village stand the old stocks and whipping post. The stocks were last used in 1835 to punish a drunken villager. Just as well I drove over or I might well have still been in Aldbury!

    A very pleasant series Ann1e.
I like the shot of the stocks best.

Your informative narrative adds greatly to this type of post. I'm sure I've seen this village in films/TV series.

    Regards.

Looks like a quiet little village, a perfect place to catch up with old friends and reminisce.
Obviously you had a nice day for it. How different your lighting and long winter shadows to the brutal blue white glare of our merciless sun. Searing heat keeps all but the firemen indoors.

I enjoyed it too Ann1e. Just how I think of an English Village.
I love miniatures, and have a wee collection of English Cottages and such, and my little English Pub is just like your pub!
And those white picket fences - something else I love!

Thanks Peter and Ulfric - glad you both like the stocks - it amazes me that they have survived the years and remained recognisable!

Yes, Mark it is a great place for socialising and the weather was unseasonably wonderful.

We have been reading in our press about the family of children who sheltered with their grandparents in the water to escape the fire at Dunalley - with the family dog. They all must have been terrified but at least the story had a happy ending on a human scale, although the grandparents have lost their home. It could have been a terrible tragedy.

It's hard for us to imagine having to live with temperatures in the higher 40s. Hope you and your family are OK.

                  Regards,
                  Ann1e

Certainly, it is, Stephen - about half an hour if you take the direct route or you can take a scenic route through the lanes and make a day of it, calling at a few more watering holes en route!

Hello Bill - hope you are continuing to enjoy good health and have enjoyed the festive season.

It was good to meet up with you in London and I'm glad you enjoyed a minute or two of nostalgia from my post!

                      Regards,

                        Hi Lyn -

I have a few such cottage miniatures too but, alas, no pub! I think Aldbury does pretty much tick the boxes for a typical English village. We, of course, enjoy seeing scenes from your neck of the wood showing life as we imagine it in Australia.

We have mostly seen bad news from Tasmania, Victoria and NSW but I know the temperatures in SA have been way up, so hope you and your family are coping and that you will soon get some respite.

                        Regards,
                        Ann1e
