  • Blaengarw Lake

As I've mentioned elsewhere I sometimes drive the Mayor of Bridgend. The current Mayor lives at the top of the Garw Valley - Blaengarw. This was once a thriving coal mining area with 3 pits in the small village of Blaengarw alone. That's all gone now, of course, and the land once occupied by mines and slag heaps has been 'reclaimed', including several lakes.

One of these lakes is opposite the Mayor's house. I often have time to kill if I'm early to collect her and one afternoon I put my wellies on (complete with suit and tie) and took some photos of the lake including this one:

It's a beautiful area and I really must do more exploring before the Mayor's term of office comes to an end in May.

    As usual comments/criticism welcome.

I have to tell you that this image does not depict beauty as you suggest but in fact is very dark and mysterious..perhaps gloomy. sorry but I had to say it. Give it some sunshine and then it will be beautiful

It is very dark, as Bill says, but I'd call it moody rather than gloomy and I rather like it The dark tone is reminiscent of the treatment of some of the landscape images in Don McCullin's book Open Skies.

      Cheers,

Gloomy is fine. It was a particularly gloomy day when I took that shot, a brief dry spell amongst the rain. The area does have its gloomy side, too, as well as beauty. It's an area that has lost its industry and now doesn't quite know what to do with itself.

Thanks John. I regard any comparison to Don McCullin's work as praise indeed!
