    Peter thank You for the fab images and the Knowledge I do believe we have soem "Gants" in Winchester and next time I am there with camera, I shall look up their names and take a few images of them ... Winchester aka Belgarum also being of Roman times (and before ...)

      Thanks for that John. I knew there were many regional names for these alleys but my memory being what it is now I couldn't recall them.

            Gant is a new term to me, but we have several ginnels in my local town...also known as snickets, but ginnel is the favoured term.

              Nice set of images there Peter.
              I've seen similar in several other medieval cities both in the UK and in other parts of Europe. Venice, Carcassone and St Petersburg readily spring to mind.
              I wonder if the social historians amongst us know of any common factor that link them together?
              I'm sure the Flemish weavers travelled further afield than East Anglia.
              I also wonder if Gantry ( a narrow elevated footway) has any connection.
              Sorry it is late and my mind is wandering and after only one very wee dram.
