This is an hdr, from three photos, with the second two 0.7 EV higher and lower than the first one. Is the oarlock socket on a wooden boat hanging at the historical pier I recently visited. Came out better than I expected, that is, not terribly hdr-ish. Processed in Photomatrix, using the "default" setting, which is a mild treatment, fairly accurate colors, giving an extra bit of oomph for the ol' E-1's sensor.
I like the little glint on the varnish.
My compliments on using HDR and managing to keep it under control. Just the way it should be done for most subjects to my mind but it can also be used to create effect in a much more dramatic and obvious way for some images.

I've worked hard to be this grumpy. It hasn't been easy at times but it's worth it.
Now you see what HDR is all about. tasteful restrained and subtle usage.
You've produced an image which is totally acceptable and belies the otherwise garish and
artificial results so often seen. Excellent.
Thanks guys, for the compliments. To my eye, judicious use of hdr is sort of like having a sensor with a wider dynamic range, just a little help with the highs and lows, but in the end I like the "effect" to be invisible.

Thanks, John! I can't take too much credit since I was just shuffling around on the pier and thought that little bit of the boat was worth a bracketed series. It was so hot and sunny I could barely see what I was doing. But then the subtlety of the hdr surprised me with the richness of its colors.
This appeals to me for two reasons.
One, I love shots of details that we miss in casual observation.
Two, you used HDR to do "what it says on the box" ie. improve a shot by increasing the dynamic range. I really dislike so many of the overdone HDR shots you see, about as much use as the "art filters" IMHO.
