  • A Good Sport - Rose 'Chicago Peace'

I guess nearly every rose grower has heard of the famous "Peace" Rose. Still a great favourite of gardeners today.
This is "Chicago Peace" - a Sport of that rose.
More intense colour than "Peace", it was bred by Johnson, USA in 1962.

    Newly opened.

    And nearly full-blown.

Nice shots of a lovely rose Lyn. Not much flower colour in our garden at the moment so it's nice to see what's happening on the other side of the world

Thanks Phill, won't be long before our summer heat hits the roses so we are enjoying them whilst we can.

Lovely images. What is a "Sport" apart from the obvious?

A sport is a natural mutation which differs in appearance or some other characterstic from the parent plant. It may occur as a bud which is different from the parent and gives rise to a stem with different foliage or flowers, for example. Many famous varieties of flowers were initially propagated from sports. One of the most successful propagated sports is the nectarine - originally (about 2000 years ago!) a mutant peach.

            Fantastic colour Lyn.

What does this phrase "summer heat" mean? Our roses shiver so much, the petals fall off.

The other David has explained "sport" very well. It is an interesting part of rose growing. This link expands it a little if anyone is interested.

Thanks David - you beat me to it!
It is usually suggested "to bud" a sport for accuracy of reproduction. I struck a cutting of "Chicago Peace" and the new bush is pretty true to colour. One of the joys of growing roses is discovering the unexpected amongst the bushes.

Ha Ha John. I thought if I post a few roses it may brighten up the forum with your colder weather approaching. Don't mean to rub it in, but the forecast for today is high 20's, and blue sunny skies.
