    HELP, Hire or RAW

    Please see the shots below of my Daughters comp in Liverpool on Sunday,
    Poor YES but have a look at the kit I have at my disposal and please let me know if I need to Hire for the next comp or shoot raw and edit ????



    Any help or critisism readily accepted !

    Hmmm..... that noise is quite bad, are they taken at ISO3200 (ISO1600) on your E-1?

    To improve the noise levels there are several things to address. Firstly I would shoot in RAW anyway so that I had total control of any noise filtering before PP in Photoshop and possibly third party plug-ins like Noise Ninja.

    You say you are prepared to hire gear for your daughter's event. Then I would next be looking at a camera body such as the E-5 or OM-D EM-5 which have far superior noise performances over your E-1. Also, they have image stabilisation built-in so that will give you extra stops allowing you to drop the ISO value up to 3 stops or so. Then I would look at some faster lenses, the f/2.0 14-35mm and particularly the f/2.0 35-100mm would be ideal for your needs looking at the two photos above. The 50-200mm might be handy also.

    Shoot at maximum aperture the lenses allow to keep the ISO as low as possible - this will also give you a shallower DoF which will make the shots look much better. You may have to raise the ISO and shutter speeds if your daughter is moving quickly though.

    I have just noticed that Ian's link on his hire list to camera bodies isn't working.

    Just some tips and I’m sure others here will have more.

      Shoot raw, get the exposure spot-on and clean up noise with (say) Topaz Denoise. You can get Topaz Denoise as a free trial for 30 days. Here are your images I gave a quick clean-up:




      Working with the originals would have given better results than the low-res ones posted.

              I was using the 70 - 300, iso 1600, shutter priority as she was moving quit quickly at times,
              Looking at your edited shots it does seem RAW would at least give me a chance,

                If allowed at the venue, a monopod could gain you a stop or two. I think you did pretty well, under the circumstances. If I were in in your shoes I'd work my way up the various options, starting with the cheapest. And definitely shoot in raw.

                  Whatever you do, don't underexpose !
                  Expose with your histogram peaks to the right, as far as you can without crushing the whites.

                  Shooting in RAW is a necessity. It gets you more information for each pixel, so you can edit more without losing so much quality. And it's free - apart from using up more space on the memory card for each photo.

                  When you use noise reduction software you can lose detail too, it's easy to overdo the software and your subject vanishes in the smoothness.

                  When there's motion, IS or a monopod won't get you any improvement.
                  If you want to stop the motion you've got to have a way to use the faster shutter speed.
                  Wider aperture lenses can be hired, which will gather more light.
                  They'll be heavier to carry, and harder to hold the long telephotos - that's a good reason for a monopod.
                  Or a different body, with better high ISO noise response.

                  Probably time to look at the E-group equipment hire.

                    Thanks for all your help Gents, I need to go away and have a try with noise reduction first, want to try the process of elimination before the "BIG" county comp in November.
                    I know I edit in PS but I think RAW is the starting block for me ???

                          If you use aperture priority you can keep the lens wide open to get as fast a shutter speed as possile.
                          It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.
