  • Llandaff Cathedral

We went to a Christening in Llandaff Cathedral, Cardiff yesterday. Despite living in this area for most of my life and having been to the cathedral many times taking people to weddings and functions, I'd never actually been inside before.

I don't think it's appropriate to post photos of the actual Christening but here are a few shots I took while we were in the cathedral. I didn't have much time to look round so these were grabbed pretty quickly, mostly with the 45mm/1.8.

The cathedral was badly damaged in 1941 and has been extensively rebuilt so it's quite a mixture of old and modern. The interior is dominated by Sir Jacob Epstein's aluminium sculpture of Christ in Majesty.

Geoffrey Webb's Jesse window at the East end of the Lady Chapel:

    Hill, Norman & Beard organ:

Couldn't resist the potential bokeh of the 45mm/1.8 on these candles:

And this flower arrangement grabbed my attention, too:

Mental note: must visit again when I've got more time to look round.

Thanks Chevvy, and thanks for identifying the flowers. I'm hopeless with flower ID.

Great shots, especially the candles. You've captured the stained glass windows well, the dynamic range in these type of shots can be very wide and getting the high-lights in the glass and details in the shadows can often be tricky. They lend themselves nicely to HDRIs.

A really nice collection. I haven't been to Cardiff for a while, but I think that it would be well worth a look on a non-shopping trip! How far is it from the City Centre?

Well, impressive that you knew anyway.

Thanks, the combination of E-M5, 45mm and Lightroom is pretty potent!

It's not far from the centre, a mile perhaps. If you've driven into Cardiff along Eastern Avenue (one of the main routes in from the M4) you've probably passed within a few hundred yards of it. Llandaff is quite unusual in that it is close to the centre of Cardiff but is a quaint little village very different from the rest of the city. So yes, definitely worth a visit.

Thanks. I expect we have driven past it! Will make a note to visit some time in the future.
