  • First time post of E510 pics.

Having recently upgraded from a bridge camera to an E510 with twin kit lens I have been trying hard to get to grips with all the settings etc of the new camera and more importantly take as many pics as possible.

Went out today with my mother and her dogs and got these shots that I was reasonably happy with.

Please excuse the boarders (if you don't like them that is) as I was just experimenting with Photoshop.

No 1, "Wet Dog", 1/640 F10 132mm ISO 400 cropped (probably my favorite)

    No 2, "Another Wet Dog", 1/640 F4.3 55mm ISO 200 cropped

    No 3, "A load of Bull", 1/320 F5.6 150mm ISO 200.

I really am enjoying using this camera. Its going to take a while to really get used to it.
I only have 8 months experience of photography so am really looking forward to developing my skills using the E510.

C + C welcome to assist with the learning curve.

    Hi bully74uk,

All three are great shots, my favorite would have to be #2 it is truly a great shot, just like you I'm a new user of the E-510 (this week in fact) and I haven't had much time with it outdoors as it has been raining here now for 3 days.

Please share more great photo's like these and enjoy the E-510, I can't wait for better weather here so I can play more with mine.

Come on guys and Gals, the C + C really does help with the learning process.

I not worried about being told my pictures are rubbish either, as long as its backed up with reasons why

The dog pictures are actually very good, but I think I would have left out the 'Load of bull' myself. It was a case of, 'That's nice, that's nice, oh dear...'

            Glad your enjoying the E510.

1st and 2nd shots are my favs, I'd be tempted to maybe saturate the 2nd Retriever shot alittle more, try and bring out the golden coat, just me though.

            Great work

Don't worry to much about the views vs replies.

Used to bug me loads however I do understand a lot of people just like to look at pics rather than comment. I'm guilty of this myself as I'm not a great tog and sometimes don't know what to say..

Perhaps if you want "hardcore" C + C you could post in the "Looking for perfection" forum, I'm too scared though

All the best and I look forward to seeing more shots from you.

              Cheers
              G

...strangely enough, I just did that very thing myself in Lightroom, and it looks really good.

Re: First time post of E510 pics.

Particularly like the first wet dog pic, but would be tempted to lose most of the body by cropping to portrait format and concentrating on the head. The dog makes a great subject, ideal for playing around with the settings on your camera whilst getting to know it. Next time, try using a wider aperture to see how it helps emphasise your subject by keeping the dog's face in sharp focus but blurring the background so that it doesn't distract.

Be sure to keep the wet dog look, though. And I particularly like the glistening wet tongue and we nose.

A great start with your new camera!

                    Maybe I will. As previously mentioned I don't mind constructive C + C

Spot On DekHog. When posting the same pictures on the "Talk Photography" Forum I did leave out the Bull/cow picture but I had already posted it on here by the time I realised it wasn't very good

                      Thank you for the comments.

I think I will definately look at re-cropping to portrait as I think you are correct with that one. And the depth of field thing is something I still need to get to grips with on the new camera.

Re: First time post of E510 pics.

Glad your enjoying the E-510 its a great camera and you have really done well here for such a short time with a DSLR.

Now has you have insisted on a critique I will put my very picky hat on.

No1 is missing a catchlight in one of his eyes which makes it look a little
dead and is easily remided in PhotoShop.

No2 is my favourite but I would crop to the top of the path in the background to get red of the attention grabbing diagonal strip running across the image, It could also do with a slight midtone and saturation boost.

No3 is my least favourite because the half a body of the other cow weakens it compostionaly and the colour balence is overly warm hence the yellow looking grass and less than white cow.

Hows that..not to harsh I hope and as I said that being very criticale which I tend to avoid as you never know how it will be recieved.
                        Regards Paul.
One day I hope to be the person my dogs think I am.

Thank you for the Critique, not harsh at all, in fact completely the opposite.
I wouldn't post my pictures on forums if I couldn't accept the Critique that's given.

What I try do with my images and more importantly other peoples images is attempt to critique them myself and then look at the comments from more experienced photographers to see if I picked up the same areas.
So Im actually very pleased that you commented on the right eye from the first picture because that was one of the areas that I thought people may pick up on.

I will be attempting the saturation boost in pic2 maybe tonight so may post the result.

As previously mentioned, the Bull shot (it sure looked like a bull, almost twice the size of the other cows in the field) was my least favorite too and I should have left it out but hey ho.

For the record. I think your second shot of the dogs profile is superb. Beats a lot of pro level work which I have seen. Thanks for posting. The 510 is a great little camera.
