  • Trying out new toy - 45mm/1.8

I'm going to two weddings and a christening in the next couple of weeks so I thought a 45mm/1.8 would be a good addition to my current lenses.

I didn't think I would like the silver lens on a black E-M5 body, but to my eye it looks great - once you take the silly little lens cap off.

Tested it out yesterday on my usual model - the dog. These are all wide open. Focusing wide open wasn't easy as he refuses to keep still. I prefer the first shot because his face is more animated but the focus on the eyes was slightly better in the second shot.

The third one is a close-up of his eye from No 2. You can see my reflection - the amount of detail in such an extreme crop is amazing. Think I'm going to love this lens!

My main observation is not about the lens but that you have some blown highlights

It's an amazing piece of kit in that it packs a fast, good quality lens into such a small package.

You'll certainly love this lens, it is absolutely best buy in M43 world IMHO.

Nice photos and nice dog :-)

Watch out though. It's one weak spot is that pretty fake aluminium dress ring on the front. I caught mine trying to fall off. I have taken it off and hidden it in it's box, cos I don't think I trust it to stay on there.

Optically, it is just great and good value as well.

Look, I'm an old man. I shouldn't be expected to put up with this.

It's been on my wish list for a while so glad to have finally got one.

Thanks! He's getting on a bit now. He's 12 which is quite old for a greyhound.

Thanks, great tip. Hadn't even noticed that the front ring unscrews.

It was the first one that had the blown highlights and yes, it's been adjusted. I'm always happy for things like that to be pointed out so they can be corrected, especially as it only takes a few seconds in Lightroom. Don't know how I missed it in Lightroom in the first place, but still...

Still my favourite lens. Took the ring off and flung it (sorry: for future prospective purchasers, stored it safely away) as I keep a lens hood on all the time.

Mines been of since I brought it, but then you do need to take it off for the lens hood to fit as you do for all of them .

One day I hope to be the person my dogs think I am.

I hate the lens cap, I made a huge press-on leather one to use when the camera's on.
