Grass Snakes fight over frog (Warning; grim)

This is all a bit grim, rerally. I heard the most awful screeching near the 9 arch bridge in Hortobagy in Hungary, and found two grass snakes fgighting over one frog. I couldn't get a clear shot and thought the photos were better than they are, but I thought I'd show you anyway. I have more shots if anyone is interested.

Interestingly I think this is where my happy snappy came into its own. Taken on my u7000.

Our cats annoy the frogs in our garden (but to my knowledge no harm to the frogs has been done) and the frogs do emit a high-pitched screech. Pretty sure the snakes would be restricted to some hissing if that.

Yes, it was the poor frog which was screeching.

there were a lot of frogs there (and so a lot of snakes). I'll post some more piccies when I've made them a bit smaller. I've been very pushed for time recently. (And I'd mislaid my cable so hadn't downloaded the little camera's piccies.)

That's an interesting observation! Thanks for sharing! But you did not mention mother-snake watching in the background

My goodness, no, I hadn't seen that. The place is heaving with snakes, though, and they're not easy to see. I'll have a look on the original.

The first time I spotted the snake and frog there was only one snake, then another tried to grab the prize and they tussled over it.

I think you're right, Falk. There seems to be a bit more snake there, either part of one of the tussling ones or a new one altogether.
