  • A magnificent Golden Pheasant

This magnificent example has eluded me on 6 visits ! This day (last week) I captured some shots in two sessions when he was "parading to excite his Lady" I hope they breed - I so would like a pair at home

Lots of shots because I wanted to capture ALL his plumage detail in its most colourful glory as a "set" for my records ... and of course to share with ... KEITH

    1. He full frontal - his Scarlet feathered chest has taken "a beating" from either young chicks or 'her indoors when mating"

    2. His Lady - who has the same plumage colours of black and beige, all over, as the Males tail

    3. His tail - see "her" plumage colours of beige/black here.

    4. His "collar" puffs up and/or out or, down further one side than the other - as here - it is always difficult to see his face, especially his beek

    5. Here you can see the blue feathers between the red chest and golden back and the green feathers around the back of his neck/below the collar. However, the beek and side of his face are 'covered'

    6. He stepped closer and up onto their 'feeding log'

    7. On his Mission - to get her He is really striding out here, running

    8. I could almost touch him now - except my hands were full of camera

    9. Shucks! he turned away ...

Was it worth me hanging about 6 hours x 6 day visits for these bird shots ?

Enjoy - I lurve them even more in the RAW

ps there are two pairs of these here at Studley Grange Butterfly World ... but they are VERY VERY SHY !

Is this me......Hope so...I remember trying to nab one of these at Paignton Zoo in 1973 with an instamatic......guess wot - these are better

I love No7 as it has him in all his glory and No 2 as it shows the female.
Great set.....good lens but must have been hard to use for this subject as you have to let them do the work in the composition - so hard to get all these long birds in the frame.....YOU COULD DO WITH A LONG ZOOM !

My first thought was the same as Keith's Chevvy - how on earth would you get such a long bird in frame! Nature sure got her paintbrush out for this guy!
Are those tail feathers the ones used in ladies hats years ago?
Thanks for posting these - great to see them.

Great series of a magnificent bird, also an interesting behavioural study.

Yes I am finding out that it DOES take some strength to cart around - especially as I have also got a heavier tripod (from Graham on here).

Maybe I should have put this in Lfi ...

I have never seen such an extroadinary bird. At first I thought that you were having us on with a toy.
I should have known you would never try anything like that, Chevvy. Don't know how I came to miss this earlier.
