  • OK - I do give a duck!

Uninspiring light, the canal down by over a foot because of a leak (but this weekends weather should help) and the Little Grebes have abandoned their nest.

Still there are always photographs that can be taken.

OOPs sorry - normally put it the post - Sigma 135-400 and ec1.4, very much aided by the flatness of the light.

Wow is right, great shots Nick. I love the fact you can see the ducklings feet, and the mother(?) looks almost bashful at having her picture taken!
        All the best,

Not sure bashful is right - the way she co-operated by twisting her body and making those nice ripples makes me wonder if she is a professional model

I don't think she was the mother as the ducklings were in a group further along the canal.

Wow! Two cracking shots here, Nick. Maybe because of, rather than in spite of, the flat, "uninspiring" light?

Thanks for sharing yet more of your "Tales of the Riverbank."

            Have a good weekend,

Hi Nick - love the wonderful saturation and pin sharp focus of these shots, especially the first one.

You are absolutely right in what you say, if you look hard enough, there's always a shot to be taken. Great effort here - shame about the Grebes abandoning their nest though, sad.

I do keep hearing good things about the Sigma 135-400, you're proving what I hear is true!

Re: OK - I do give a duck!

                    Thanks all.

Zuiko-John is right, the flatness of the light kept the highlights down - which made it easier for the exposure to be very crisp and nicely saturated.

The 135-400 seems to have had very mixed reviews, some regard it as slow and with a tendency to softness, but I'm very happy with mine and think it is well suited to the E-3.

The apparent failure of the Little Grebes is sad - both for them and because the nest was ideally suited for some good photographs.

There have been several other Little Grebe nests - all seem to have been abandoned through the spring/early summer.
