  • Ger-click! The Concert

Here is the E-PL3 at the edge of it's comfort zone. It's a two shot pano of a concert given by a visiting German orchestra this weekend. (It's a twin town thing)
The concert was recorded and this shot might get used on the CD presented to the orchestra

By the end of the evening the daylight was fading and the stage lighting was none too bright, particularly at f5.6 - so ISO1600 was called into play.

This is one of those occasions when I wished I had taken the E-M5. It's shutter sounds so much quieter in these circumstances.

Meanwhile, I recently updated said E-M5 to v1.2. Eeek! Was that a mistake? It still works I should add.

Not seen a panoramic CD box before

I updated my E-M5 to 1.2, and got a "Card Read Error" when I tried to use the camera. It's ok now after taking the card out and re-inserting, but it was a scary moment.

Oh, still using the old narrow CDs up north then??

There is method in my madness. The pano is 2:1 aspect so you can fold it and it becomes square, maybe an inner sheet for a CD. All the dark area could take white print. Coo. I should be a graphic designer...

Pete did you use AE lock or manual? (to get equal exposure for the two frames) Where did you set the metering? What's the massive dark blue square on the right?

I usually use AE lock, and I always have one of the buttons set on both my cameras to do it. I also use centre weight metering, so I did focus/meter then lock centered on the orchestra, then reframe for the right hand picture then took the left hand picture at the same exposure.

The big square is a concrete balcony at the venue turned blue by the colour balance of evening light I guess. They were performing so I couldn't get to a better position without walking in front of the audience.

I had a fight with the CS3 panorama stiching and eventually opted for "manual placement" with perspective switched on. To my surprise this worked when the auto process failed. I will have to remember that trick in future.
