  • Playing with wireless flash

Just been playing with wireless flash for the first time thanks to the E30 I purchased from OlyPaul, just a few quick shots of my favourite subject!

Welcome to the world of portable studios...

What remote trigger devices do you use Tim? I have been using iShoots for some time now, as they seem to work pretty well.

Smashing subject to practice with, by the way.

Yeah, a lovely subject, but the flash still looks pretty harsh and direct (strong shadows and pinprick light in the eyes). Was this bare off-camera flash aimed at the subject and no modifier used?

        Re: Playing with wireless flash

Thanks guys, this was done using the wireless flash built into the E30... I've have the FL36R for several years but never had a body that supports it until now.

It was a bit of a of a rough and ready "ohh it works!" kind of test... just using the built-in flash to trigger and holding the FL36 at arms length; I have a diffuser on the FL36 but none on the built-in flash which is probably why it's a bit harsh.

Just in case you are interested Tim, these are the wireless triggers I use. I have the single (well I actually have two) triggers, and three receivers and have used these successfully over a pretty long period with the Oly FL-50 and three other YongNUO flash units.

I ordered from their eBay page, but it's the same company. Very helpful chap.

            Thanks for the link!

I must admit that I never liked flash, mainly due to the poor results you get from pop-up flashes but I forced myself to buy a proper flash to see if I could get better results...

I think I need to learn how to balance the light from the flash with the ambient light better and where to position the light sources to minimise shadows (e.g. the shadow under Lauren's nose in the second shot)

John - it's not really so much about the direction of light as the quality of light. Get it behind an umbrella or softbox or even bounce it if possible. The shot below was taken using one flash on a TTL lead, and bounced from white kitchen units and the white ceiling behind and above me, so basically facing backwards at 45 degrees.... large and pretty soft wrap around lighting from one bare flash....

Nice to see you are already getting to grips with the E-30 Tim and that is a great looking kid.

Just a suggestion bounce flash is much better than direct none diffused flash plus you do not get the harsh shadows on the wall.

This was just bounced flash of the ceiling using the E-30 and FL36 and my Granddaughter Chelsea, you should try it.

                Regards Paul.
One day I hope to be the person my dogs think I am.

Great shot of a stunning model 'DekHog' - I think we've seen her before. I don't like that 'thing' on her tooth though, it almost look like a hole!

Yeah, but that's what the clone stamp tool is for.....

It's actually quite nice in real life, as she's got the brightest set of pearly whites you've ever seen..... even better than these >>>

I can see Chelsea is giving Lauren a good race in the cuteness stakes!

Definitely going to be trying some flash bouncing experiments... my friend asked me to photograph his wedding and I'm sure that will be necessary for the evening do...

Out of interest, did you use the pop-up flash as well or did you cover it to stop it firing? or was the flash mounted?

The flash was mounted on the camera Tim.
