Good pics. For me this shows how well any of the Pens and kit lenses perform.

Bodies like the epl2 at the price they go for second hand have to be one of the best bargains going.

How do you find the IQ compared to the E620/E30?

Well let me just say first I brought it at a good price as a carry around camera for when I would not usually take one with me and it will not be replacing my E-30 .

Ok down to first impressions the auto white balance gets it wrong every time in overcast conditions and always veers to the green spectrum, where as the E-620 nails it every time.



It tends to underexpose 1/2 a stop (which is no bad thing for preserving the highlight detail) where as the 620 tends to overexpose 1/3 of a stop, which is why it is always set to -03 except for this test.



Sharpness and noise (at least at ISO400) seem similar, although the kit mtf 14-42 has tad more fringing than the FT 14-42 on high contrast edges.

I white balanced and exposure balanced the images here to compare them better.

100% view


None of these things are a problem for me as I shoot raw all the while and can be corrected.

On a personal view I find that when hand holding with IS on I get sharper images more times using the E-620 but then again the size and ergonomics make it easier to hold steady, at least for me.

But I'm sure me and the E-PL3 will enjoy our selves on those times I do not want to carry a DSLR around.

Like many people, I've been weighing up 43 vs. m43... I've never really had that much of an issue with the weight but that's not to say it wouldn't nicer to carry less, I just don't want to spend a fortune for the privilege.

No plans to get the VF2? Might help get sharper shots holding it to your eye...

Thanks for posting these, No 3 and 4 are favourites. The dof is spot on - to get all of the visible flower sharp while getting the background out of focus - I always struggle with this. I'm sure the quality of output is also dependent on a highly competent photographer as demonstrated here.

That would be right.

When I was a film guy my small carry round kit was a Minolta XD 11 (light and quite shutter) and a 24mm, 35mm and 90mm primes, so that equivalent would be my aim eventually, finances allowing.

No plans to get the VF2? Might help get sharper shots holding it to your eye...

Thank you Brian and Huw, it'a a little harder work with the Pen but it's nice to know I can still get the quality and type of images I'm used to with the E-30.

Indeed, unless you're buying one as a small carry-round you might as well go the whole hog... I've had various ideas of buying ep3/em5/g3/gh2 with various combinations of 43 and m43 lenses and it always seems a bit half-hearted... what I like about my current setup is that everything can mix-and-match down to the batteries.

In an ideal world I'd like to keep my E1/14-54 too but that might have to be sacrificed if I switch.

I have the E-M5 with 12mm, 20mm, 25mm and 45mm - so similar kit to your Minolta.
I also have an EP-1 to which I attach the 20mm when I need a small light kit
the latter was my first m43 investment...I was so wowed that I sold my Canon gear and bought the E-M5 and other primes (still have 14-42 and 40-150 but hardly use them).

Paul, WoW ! WoW! That firs shot HIT me right between the eyes ! Lurve the colour ...
and the backdrop is great for ...

I am about to (this weekend) play about with a few shots, whereby I make a layer of each layer of petals ... and "feather edge"; I shall selectively sharpen some petals, but darken the back layer, and the middle layer same but a little less and the top layer - in this would be as is! I am hoping to obtain much greater Depth - almost 3D (and that is in another bit of software here ...) The selected and sharpened petals will forma a tight focus spot !

If it works, I shall post on here ... I may also start my Roses project in the mini pop up studio for the same purpose ... I may not and just take my Spaniel out to the streams and mud pools ... and get filthy with him
