  • Swift getting a drink

Here is something I wanted to achieve for quite a while now: taking photos of a Martin, Swallow or Swift, when they are about to help themselfs over local waters.

This is my first presentable shot of a Swift about to take a drink. Enjoy!

          Re: Swift getting a drink

I've tried and tried and tried and tried to get shots of Swifts in flight, never got one that I really like.
I've got a church near me where they nest under the roof and the sweep round the tower so quickly and make such a noise.
I'll be back to try again soon.

          Great shot.

Ps Swifts are one of my favorite birds.

              Re: Swift getting a drink

Glad you liked the pic. I was lucky to get it on that particular occasion, because strong gusts were stirring up the lakes surface in an unpredictable manner the whole time. When Swifts came down they would, for good reason, aim for an undisturbed surface, but these were scattered all over the place and most out of reach, for me.
Finally got some shots off, from which this is the best and only one I kept. In all I may have spent 20min. trying, before my arms got tiered from swinging the Bigma+EC-14 (!) around.

Presentable? I think you are too modest.

                Well done,

                      Re: Swift getting a drink

That was very clever of you falk ... Did your swallow 'slow down' some as it swooped on an insect on the water ?

It is also an unfulfilled ambition of mine to capture a swallow in full flight.
The closest I got to fulfillment was at the moment of take off from a bridge support.
                      Welcome Swallow

                        Re: Swift getting a drink

Hi Mark, no, no need to, as they actually do slow down quite a bit, to take a drink from the waters surface. They are pretty fast anyway, though. There was no insect or such, for which this bird aimed for Mark, it's their usual way of drinking - in flight, that is! Swallows, Martins, Swifts - all alike - as far as I know.
I think your IS did a good job of keeping that bridge support sharp - as you panned with the Swallow ?!

Super shot; never managed a bif with these and always wondered how they do not crash or damage their jaws on contact with the water.

Thanks for the info, Falk, I know little of bird behaviours and never cease to be amazed by those who do.

My shot was no pan, I anticipated its take off from the bridge support, shutter set to continuous 5fps at 1/1600.
