  • Did the impossible Kingfisher thing

Curing a hangover in fresh air at a local lake (former gravel pit) I noticed one - then two Kingfishers in the willows lining the shore. Took some long shots and then tried to get closer but was spotted. They flew some meters and perched again. I went around too and - with Bigma prefocussed and all set - going very slowly - I nailed one through some leaves before he knew I was there!

Needless to say, I am very pleased with this one

Nice one Falk...a Male...was the other a female.

Great to at least get an image when you have spotted them.

              Thanks all!

Keith, in fact, I don't know how to tell the genders appart. I thought they are coloured alike!? With it's dark feet I was actually thinking this might be a young bird. Unfortunately I don't have good enough photos from the second to tell any difference in colouring, as they were all to far away and light was dull anyways. As you are the expert on these flying gems, please let me know what I need to look for, will you?

Ian, I was probably still swaying gently in every direction, just as the IS likes it

                Nice shot Falk.

The females have a reddish/orange base on the lower mandible.

A humdinger of a shot. I really like the blurred surroundings [bokeh?] with the bird in focus in the middle... this for me, makes the shot.

                      Falk,

This is great. I like the way he's looking out through the out of focus green leaves.

                        So nice Falk,
They are a tantalizing little bird, I have yet to capture one. Something to look forward to.
I like the way he appears to be peering out of the foliage.

Thank you bredman. I will check for it in my photos and/or if I might get there to see them again.

Maybe he's at the stage where he gets the shakes if he DOESN'T have a drink!

Falk, that's a lovely shot, enhanced by shooting through the leaves to ceate a soft, out of focus frame for the bird. Congratulations.
