  • Queen's Birthday LWE

Another public holiday in honour of the Queen's Birthday -
not that it made any difference to Janette and me, for in retirement every day's a holiday !

We took an early walk along the river and crossed the two new footbridges glimpsed here,
but what we did not expect was to see these spartan youths wading in the Ovens,
which at this time of year is a misnomer if ever there was one !

One of the lads appears to have lost his ball ... they are of course the Rovers, a local football team !

    Having a cold beer and a barbie is a popuar winter pastime . E-PL3 + Zuiko 12-60mm

Looks to be an impressive footbridge Mark and by the look on some of the brave individuals the water is not the warmest

The kids in the water look frozen, but at least it is BBQ weather all year round for you - we'd be happy just to manage the odd one or two during the summer!

Yes Chevvy, boy talk" can get colourful at times aside from "small walnuts" there are lots of descriptive metaphors that us guys use among ourselves ... but will leave it to Nick to expand this conversation before Ian bans me !

I'm not sure that "brave" be the right word for it, Huw. "Macho" maybe, I guess they were proving to themselves just how tough Rovers are !
That footbridge is the second to be completed almost simultaneously with the first which spans the river about 200 metres downstream. It connects with many other recreational walking and cycling tracks. I will post another thread on them as soon as I get around to shooting a couple more aspects in good light.

Actually John, this time of year through autumn until spring is our most popular BBQ season. The height of summer is way too hot outdoors and fire bans are always in place when temps get up into the 30's and 40's (celsius).

What an interesting set of pix, Mark. I love the light in the first.

Some of the lads don't look too convinced about being in the river - maybe a pre-requisite of getting the tucker!

Yes Annie - these kids are about two gens behind me and sometimes their behaviours make me wonder whether I still belong on this planet. Yet at the end of the day I believe they are pretty good kids.

                    Re: Queen's Birthday LWE

I just had some feedback from one of the guys in the picture below who gave me the ok to snap them.

                    "Mark,
Thanks very much for the pics Mark. Much appreciated.
I am going to print them off and display them at the club.I had a read of some of your friends responses, very funny, especially the walnut comment!
And yes, the water was bloody freezing! We bathe in the water as part of our recovery from the game every Sunday.
                    Thanks, Andrew"
