  • My E-M5 tries "Snaarmanesque"

Today I had to take my daughter to puppy training class ( yes I'm not sure which of them is actually being trained).

At the bottom of the field where the class is held there is a "collection" of assorted farm implements of varoius ages and states if disrepair. This provided an opportunity to see if I could emulate Pete's great shots of such things. Not sure I succeeded but I did try.

All taken with the 12-50mm kit lens and processed from raw in FastStone.

First an old Seed Drill I think.

    There's a Tractor.

    Plenty of spare Tyres.

Then there's er.... one of these.

This one must be dead, it's gone belly up but it's got good tyres.

This I know is a quite modern Plough but the grass is starting to devour it.

And finally, my favourite, a Green Tyre.

The E-M5 is a delight to use, at last a digital camera that handles like a "real" camera should.

    Thanks for looking.

Plenty of interest there, Peter, but the shot of the series for me is the last but one. Superb light and composition and I love the repeating patterns of the plough.

      Thanks John.
If you like repeating patterns how about a mirror image too.

Oh dear, I can see I must be turning into "Mr Details" I maintain I shoot little bits of stuff because I can't see the bigger picture..

That's a fantastic and truly ancient seed drill! My favourites are the two tyre pictures. Great stuff..

Hehe, two for the price of one. If I'd seen this version first I'd think it was great, but the crop (no pun intended) in your first post is truly inspired, it really gets that detail down to Snaarmanesque level. I think you've just added a new word to the English language by the way. Maybe we should hold a Snaarmanesque competition and get Pete to judge it!

                He he...

Actually I turn to details when I've run out of big ideas, and I've photographed my village to death this last few years.

Notice that during this short break up in the Lakes I am back to photographing big stuff again.

I still can't resist details though, just like some of those pictures above

Thanks Pete. Your "little bits of stuff" shots have opened my eyes to the fascinating details that are around us that we miss when we just look at the "big picture".

I'm finding the colours a bit too intense. I know this is not the critique board, so apologies if you'd rather not discuss but how were these produced? Are they from JPEG and if so did you use Vivid or some other image enhancement function or are they from RAW? The greens in the first are a bit cool and later in the other shots they are warmer, but I am a bit dazzled by the colour in all of them to be honest.

                      Thanks again John.

The second shot is a different shot, both are uncropped. I took several to find the most pleasing (to me) composition.

I've been staring at the first with the seed machine and the more I look at it the more I think it looks like an HDR. I have even re-booted my computer for fear that the the monitor profile had gone funny.

Thanks for your comments Ian, I'm always pleased to receive helpful comments and advice.
I was a little concerned that I had overdone the processing. The light was very intense but much of the detail I was trying to obtain was in the shadows of the tree line. These were processed from raw using FastStone and I made use ( perhaps too much) of the "lighting" adjustments. I haven't used FastStone a lot and of course I'm still on a learning curve with the E-M5 havng only had it a week. I'm looking forward to DxO adding E-M5 modules to Optics Pro which is my prefered pp software but I guess that may be a while off yet.

You're quite right Ian that was my feeling too, sorry I caused you to reboot. It was very difficult to tone down the very bright (not blown) foreground so I settled for the HDR look.

Wow. I like these, even though you are probably all aware that these type of shots aren't my fav. Theres something to these - I think the em5 seems to lend itself to these storytelling/journalistic kind of shots very well.

Also, the togger ain't half bad either
