A Tour of Greys Court gardens

Greys Court (Gardens only) at Rotherfield Greys, Nr. Henley, Bucks. They allow "timed entry tickets" to the house on first come and first served basis no pre-booking! Next visit I shall tour the house

Just past the Cafe' ! sorry, in Henley-on-Thames, "Tea Rooms" is a beautiful old Victorian path, murdered by ignorant repairs with CEMENT and no yoghurt spread on new red bricks to "age" them. There is a rope stopping access through the arch - but I removed it, from spoiling this shot.




There are lots of incredible gates through the gardens ... very Alice through the Looking Glass - elegant like this one




There is a delightful old Tower - I may "drop in" a nice and interesting sky to this shot




I noted quite a few variety of Bluebell here






Even Pinkbells




Looking through the gates to the Herb Gardens and on to the Cafe' nay! "Tea Rooms"!




Close by, is the Kitchen Window and the Water Tap ... JOKING the arch leads to the lawn outside the main entrance to the house




The purpose of my visit, was to the see the most magnificent Wisteria Tunnel - but the Frost, torrential rains and winds took their toll on the blossoms. This is part of the old roots some 200 years olde - I hope to see the blooms next year




Reds ! Yeah! Oly is marvellous .. there were some stunning Peony blooms

I love the Tulip on the left, its colours and light through are unusual




I was fascinated by what this wall was part of, along one side of the (now) rose Gardens ... Nick says its a vegetable store full of vents




Along and to the right another length of the wall at right angles, has a fireplace ! Nick says maybe for smoking and drying out ... Hams etc.,





I think this is an Allium




This Keep is part of the Gatekeepers House ... again, this needs a nice and interesting sky dropped in - and leveling of the Keep not the Chimmney




Walking back to the Car Park I saw a great Conquer Tree in bloom




I love this fence ... leading off down hill of the field (where the Hereford Cow and Calf were) ... I love the rise and fall of the land and the fence laid to follow it




In the Car Park, someone had really ARRIVED in Style




This Temperature Gauge shows how important oil temp was




A Beautiful Vintage car




and last, but not least, the all important PICNIC Basket

A wonderful garden ideed Chevvy, full of interesting flora and masonry.

But tell Nick he's quite mistaken about those holes in the wall - they are clearly for pouring molten lead on the heads of nosy photographers and pot smokers who might be tempted to get into the red poppy and marijuana plantation ...

I enjoyed this stroll in the garden with you Chevvy!
I love the masonry in that wall, it looks as though everyone has had a go at it at some time!
Adore the peonies - I have tried to grow them several times but with no success. I have got some pink bluebells, and white too, think they are the Spanish Bluebells.
And love that picnic basket, could get a few sandwiches in that!

Advise she books house visit as soon as she arrives ... its not a big house, but quite lovely - I would not mind it with a Lottery win and the SIZE of the Wisteria is amazing the roots are about a few thousand feet in total length

Lyn, I am so glad you enjoyed the stroll too! I shall go back for the Roses and share those with you too!

The old walls are not mentioned in the small booklet I picked up - next visit I shall ask the Head Gardener - who seemed to follow me around the gardens, he was interested in why I used a tripod and got the camera so close, but "pushed the shutter button" using a cord ... I am going to do "some" tricks with layers to see what I can make of the Peony shots (raw has so much more detail than these small jpegs

Those big old picnic baskets usually had a leg of lamb or ham to be carved; and a proper salad ingredients - I have some photos of "contents" from Goodwood Revival will look for these ...

I love this time of year with the emerging foliage and the spring/early summer plants all trying to decide if its the right time to flower yet, and this is a wonderful walk about what looks to be a really interesting old English garden.
The good weather up here yesterday meant a change of plans for me, and a visit to Seaton Deleval Hall & gardens, north east of Newcastle, so at last summer must be here. It's also interesting to see that some of the plants that you've photographed are at a similar stage in the north for once.

Goodness me, Chevvy, you had a busy day - I can see why you concentrated on the garden this time as trying to fit in the house as well you would have been in overload mode!

We are fortunate to have so many National Trust properties to visit. I have to say Barrie and I normally spend most of our time in the gardens unless the weather is particularly bad - I have to admit that I find one four poster bed much the same as another and I get bored quickly with interiors, whereas gardens always seem to have a style of their own depending on the natural landscape. I am sure many others find the complete opposite - little interest in gardens and great interest in the architecture. Life would be dull if we all had the same interests!

Chris, I wish I had captured some shots of the most magnificent Wisteria Tunnel - you would be run out of expression of passionate words for it ME TOO ! I think the "North/South" divide in Temps is fast disappearing, with "Global Warming" ... You have to say your Nearest town, so I can plot where you are ? My beautiful red Ducati 748 SPS went to a really nice chap up your way Morpeth !

Ann1e, I do so lurve being "mature" enough to love my NT Membership and yet young and fit enough to wander about the grounds ... I do find many of these "Houses" are like for like, so I am never upset for not seeing indoors and as you rightly say, the Gardens are something quite unique - also, there are unlikely to be queues outside

I apologise for not "dropping in the skys", I should have or "straightening" the Tower - but I am getting my MoJo back - just its run out, now and needs a holiday with me ! but we shall be BACK, in force soon ... refreshed and raring to go ...

Chris ... You have to say your Nearest town, so I can plot where you are ?

Hexham - sometimes described as looking like an Italianate medieval hill town with 3 towers rising above the houses on its raised river terrace overlooking the River Tyne. The three towers are:
the Abbey bell tower
the Moot Hall (old gateway/courtroom/high status entertainment building in the days of the Border Reivers)
the old Gaol (oldest purpose built prison in England and the end point for anyone upsetting those in the old justice building!)

We took a walk around Greys Court a few years back, I think it was before they undertook a great deal of refurbishment work. Interesting place, many low flying Kites too
