  • Plant identification please?

Anyone care to put a name to this beautiful yellow water plant, photographed in the grounds of Wyvill Hall at Constable Burton, near Leyburn, North Yorkshire. It was close to 18 inches tall.

Arum Lily family ! I took some shots of these at Hilliers Gardens and Arboretum the other Sunday ... Water Marginals - my RHS Encyclopaedia are back in the loft so I cannot check out the colour/latin name for you.

Certainly looks uncannily like the ones on Wikipedia. And if I recall there was a certain odour, which my wife blamed on me, and I on the dog.

            Re: Plant identification please?

It's the good old skunk cabbage so named (if you care to take a smell of its flowers) because of its rather ripe whiff! It's really at its best at this time of the year when flowering, as the foliage is not particularly interesting. Best grown in damp bog garden type conditions. And as Chevvyf1 says, it's a member of the Arum familly.

            Common Name: Yellow skunk cabbage
            Genus: Lysichiton
            Species: americanus

            Regards

Ah yes, but your remarks were in context and it's nice to have confirmation.

                  Re: Plant identification please?

Quite apart from the name question, I love the picture.

I photographed some of these at RHS Harlow Carr a couple pf years ago but I don't thnk mine came out so well.
