  • B&W?

In the right light conditions Magpies display a feathering with metallic blue, green and bronze, difficult to get the exposure right. The lawn offered plenty of food of some kind that the Magpies could not resist. Allowing me to come close, usually not possible with these wary birds.

Three very fine shots you have there, Tord - the crocus makes a lovely backdrop for 3.

Your Maggies are very different to their Aussie cousins, Tord - as birds go, ours are remarkably bold ... so much so that as photo subjects go we tend to ignore them as too common a target.

After a wet summer we have them in plague proportions all over our lawns seeking out food scraps.

Lovely images Tord. I have been trying and trying but can't get a decent shot of a Magpie. Around me they don't come anywhere near humans, probably because we have sought to kill them all for centuries. The very fact that there numbers are increasing over here is a measure of their success as a species!

Great shots showing difficult to capture details.

Certainly the ones that visit my garden (stealing the hen food) are impossible to photograph as they are very nervous.

Great shots and you would need a hefty telephoto to get near enough here to get a shot of one.

            A lovely set Tord.
A very difficult species to capture, well done.

              Thanks for feedback.

In normal circumstances these guys will vanish as soon as you stop and start watching them from within 25 meters or closer. Magpies are common around here, we have plenty of parks in my home town. Many people dislike them for allegedly feeding on bird chicks which is true to some extent - my view is they fill a needed slot in the eco-system.

Yes, they do prey on young songbirds occasionally but so do domestic cats - they are estimated to kill 50,000,000 songbirds a year and 150,000,000 creatures in total. No one advocates controlling cats with traps etc. Also one of our best loved garden visitors, the Great Spotted Woodpecker, takes it's fair share of nestlings from nest boxes - another species no one seeks to control.

Just to put it all into perspective!

Tordan, it is lovely to see that you have captured the Magpie in ALL its glory ! Your right about so many colours as well as black & white

David, we are "Dog & Bird" people with 15 feeders outside our bungalow bedroom window - we view the birds with our brekkers in bed each morning ... in order to PROTECT the birds, we now have 6 x Sonic Cat repelling units THEY WORK ! which is great, as our large garden was used by too many cats for morning & evening exercise as well as bird hunting - no smells or cats now
