  • Two portraits from my recent Studio Lighting demo...

    Hi All

I had a long standing booking to run a studio lighting workshop at a local camera club last Friday evening, which I very much enjoyed doing. Just wanted to post two images I took at this workshop to illustrate to the members how nicely a single flash unit can work for portraits. (hope that doesn't sound too self complimentary?!)

My daughters best friend, Shannon who - believe it or not, is just 14. She is very good at modeling for me. Shan is always smiling... a big beaming smile, and when she first posed for this shot, as ever she had her massive smile right across her face. I made a quick request for a "no-smile face please, Shan" and she immediately complied.

This shot was with a shoot through brolly!

And then there's Maz... who has done many model shoots with me, and is my long standing 'demo model' who is always willing to accompany me to my club demo shoots. I didn't know until earlier this week that she had dyed her hair red... personally, I think it looks amazing.

This shot was with a softbox.

    I wanted a nonchalant look...

    John

Nice images John and demonstrates nicely why one light is nearly always enough in the right hands.

Number 2 is a very striking image indeed, I'm presuming you enhanced the eye colour to complement the hair colour, or are her eyes really that striking colour?
    Regards Paul.

Hey Paul - ahh yes, I have overdone the blues a little on the HSL slider. Maz does have striking blue eyes, but not quite that striking!

Lovely shots John of two beautiful girls. To think you got those with just one flash is really inspiring. I've not used my flash very much as it seems to be very harsh, just haven't had time to persevere I guess. It would be good to do a thread showing some tips if you've got time. No one did a video of your workshop did they?

            Hi John

It just goes to show what fantastic results can be obtained by keeping it simple, beautiful models and lovely photos, I expect the girls were very pleased with the results.

            All the best,

Very nice lighting with the umbrella, John - mine always appears too harsh and directional when I use it, but you seem to have nice wrap-around soft light....

Both shot's are very good indeed, and both of your models have done you proud. Good work with the strobes.

The eye treatment is great, John. I wonder if the highlight area on her face is a little too bright, though? I'm not seeing much detail there.
