Backlighting and Macro

[Grumpy Hec]

The product of an hour or so playing around with still life on the kitchen table. I think it's a crysanthymum but the point is I have been experimenting again with backlighting using a cheap LED light from Homebase. Lots of fun and good to try different lighting.



E520 + Sigma 150 Macro. Plus my first image processed in LR4 as I've just upgraded from LR3.

Keep your eyes on ALdi and Lidl. Apparently, they regularly have 5000 Kelvin daylight LED floodlights. Good image.

Very nice, my favourite type of lighting which I'm always looking for when out and about photographing flora.

Thanks everybody.

These LED lights are great kit at silly prices. For occasional still life I think I prefer them to flash as you can model the light so easily. may play around with diffusing to soften which is better for flowers if lighting directly.

Hec, could you show us the light (or a link to it) please? It sounds like a good economical light source for still life, as you say, but I'm not quite sure what you're talking about.

Here is link to the one I used. I got mine from my local Homebase but
there's loads of similar lights around from all sorts of sources.

They are very white but harsh. Diffusing is fairly easy I suspect and you could shine into reflectors and umbrellas to great effect I'm sure. Monfrottos and others are now starting to sell photo specifc verions. Not sure if they have an advantage over the sort of thing I'm playing with and they are certainly more expensive. Ebay has photo specifc ones as well

Many thanks Hec. I've seen photo-specific ones advertised from the likes of Kaiser, but they are expensive. I like the idea of using them for still life - as you say, you can see what the effect will be and adjust accordingly.

I wonder if this is the start of the death of the flashgun?

Mmmmm. For somethings I think LEDs may become first choice. Still life they certainly work.

Pretty much what I was thinking. I heard or read somewhere that the fancy fashion photogs are using them now in preference to flash because you can get plenty of nicely colour-balanced light from the high end ones. They run cool and you get the advantages of seeing what you are going to get, plus you don't have to let a flash off in your model's face.

The good units look expensive at the mo but I'm sure they will come down soon.
